What an important day...!!! Since initial works back in 2014 to try and set up a Shed Layout, we have finally reached a very important goal - the very first trains ran inside the Shed today!!!
Admittedly it was not on the proposed track-plan but a simple single track oval was laid out on the new boards and two trains were chosen for this special occasion - The Eurostar and the Class 395 Javelin. It was to be the Javelin which took the honour of being the very first train to run on a circuit within the shed which it did with ease...
Of course, as much as it was an excuse to run some trains, there is also a very important reason for doing so. Train track should lay flat on the board, there should be no voids under it and no points where it pivots on a ridge or rise between boards - any such issues will cause your trains to have problems on your lovely new layout, therefore it is essential to put down some track, run a train and iron out any problems before you start putting on loads of expensive scenery or wire up the layout.
Colcester has a few board issues but nothing which cannot be rectified by adding more support underneath and these will eliminate the hiccups and leave a nice smooth running railway.
Of course, the milestone today marks the end of the major construction work which started with ordering a new shed, insulating it, weather-proofing it and constructing the framework for the boards to rest upon. From this point on, barring a few bits of additional support under the layout, its now pretty much moving on to track laying as per plan.
Exciting times ahead so watch this space!!!
So, so all of you who read these posts, here is a reward of pictures of the two trains today on the layout boards...
