Network Rail has signed a contract with Colcester Depot to stable a permanent maintenance train to cover the local area. This means a rake of three Mk2 coaches and a track cleaning van will be used to sort out minor issues on the tracks coming into Colcester, Rye, Denchester and St Elizabeths. Major faults and issues will still require full track closures but its hoped that these can be reduced by used the new maintenance train based at Colcester.
The maintenance train will be pulled by a Network Rail Class 37 however there is a caveat to allow the Freightliner Class 90 to pull this train if needed.
